Welcome to Rising Tide Barbers, where the art of barbering meets the spirit of surfing. I'm Darren Lundquist, a lifelong surfer with a deep passion for art and an eye for detail. At 34 I've spent over half my life teaching others how to ride waves as a surf instructor , sharing my love for surfing with thousands of students since I was 15.
Seven years ago, I discovered another passion: barbering. The precision, creativity, and personal connection involved in cutting hair felt like I'd found yet another creative outlet similar to surfing. .
After learning how to cut hair and working at a couple other shops briefly, I started Tofino Barber at the very end of 2018 and had the very special opportunity to create what was essentially the only barbershop in a town of 2500 people and run it for several years before selling it and embarking on a journey outside of Tofino.
Barbering has brought a new level of optimism and fulfillment to my life. It’s not JUST about the perfect cut; it’s about the connection with each client, I am welcoming of all types of people including neurodivergent folks .. I am a patient and caring person who puts my heart and soul into my work to make people feel comfortable in my chair and confident in their looks upon leaving !
Dan the Barber
Born in England and raised in Parksville from a young age, Dan brings a lifetime of lived experience into the chair. Before barbering, he worked a range of fascinating jobs — including management roles in nightclubs and liquor stores and correctional facilities — he spent his younger years touring in a successful band as a drummer.
Dan has always been drawn to creativity and detail, whether it’s music, old cars (one of his favourite topics), or refining a haircut. He’s known for his sharp eye, calm presence, and genuine love of shooting the shit with clients while delivering consistent, well-thought-out cuts.
After completing Rising Tide Barber School, Dan went on to become a part-time barber at Rising Tide, where he’s done exceptionally well. He’s built a strong, loyal client base and continues to grow through passion, precision, and real connection.
